Tips For Storing Your Furniture In A Storage Facility

If you are moving out of the country for business purposes, then you will need to store your home's furniture in a self-storage unit. You should always rent a climate controlled unit so that your wood furniture will not become damaged and so your fabric furniture will not grow mold or mildew. In addition, follow each of these tips to ensure that your furniture will come out of storage in the same shape that it was in when you put it into storage:

Tip: Stand Your Couches Up on Their Ends to Save Space

To save on storage space, you should stand your couches up on their ends. However, you should first place a pallet on the floor and cover it with plastic sheeting or a blanket. The pallet will keep your couch's end from becoming soiled from the floor in your storage unit. It will also prevent water damage on your couch in the case that storm water gets into your storage unit. Place the couch's cushions on top of the upper end of the couch for protection.

Tip: Never Store Your Mattress Standing on Its Side

While you will be tempted to stand up your mattress on its side to save space in your storage unit, you should never do so. Standing your mattress on its side will cause it to sag and will ruin its structural integrity while in storage. Instead, you need to wrap your mattress in plastic sheeting and then store it flat. The best place to put your mattress is on the top of a large table or other stable furniture. If you do not have a large table to store, then you can place pallets on the floor of your storage unit and put the mattress on top of them.

Tip: Apply a Layer of High-Quality Wood Polish on All Furniture Items Before Storing Them

Finally, before you place any wooden furniture items into your storage space, first you need to clean them and apply a layer of high-quality furniture polish on their surfaces. The wood polish will help to protect the wood from drying out and becoming damaged while your furniture sits in storage. You should never wrap your furniture in plastic while it is in storage because the wood needs the opportunity to breathe. If you wrap your furniture in plastic, then moisture can build up around it and cause your fine furniture to warp.
