Four Ways to Find Affordable Men's Eyeglasses

Finding men's affordable eyeglasses may seem like a daunting task, but really it is not. As a starting point, you could ask your friends for advice, as they may know of dozens of ways in which you can get cheap eyeglasses. Otherwise, you could try any of the following ways to get your glasses for less. Some of these ideas may not have occurred to you before.

Men's Clubs

Elk club, Knights of Columbus, Shriners, Masons—whatever men's club you belong to, ask them about their eyeglasses programs. Many of these clubs collect used eyeglasses and donate them to charity or sell the glasses and frames cheaply for others to use. If you see a set of frames in the donation box at your men's club, ask your leaders or chairpersons about purchasing the set. If you are willing to give a small monetary donation for the frames, your leaders may accept the exchange.

Your Dad's Frames

Some guys love the way their fathers' eyeglasses looked. Since the deceased are not often buried with their glasses, the glasses are given to family. If you got your dad's eyeglasses as a keepsake after he passed, you could have the lenses removed and then use his frames for your own glasses. Then you will only have to pay for the prescription lenses. This is akin to ladies using their mothers' diamonds to create new jewelry, only you are getting something more functional out of your dad's glasses.

Reading-Glasses Turnstiles

If your eyes are not that bad off, you may be able to get away with just reading glasses. There are many different styles and choices for reading glasses on the turnstiles at pharmacies and opticians' clinics everywhere. Reading glasses from these turnstiles are relatively cheap too. Additionally, reading glasses frequently do something that few eyeglass-frame companies ever do; they go on clearance for pennies on the dollar.

Medicaid and Veteran's Benefits

When none of the above quite work for you, there is always the option of your state-funded health insurance for low-income individuals. This health-insurance program, often referred to as Medicaid, pays for eye exams and any pre-approved eyeglass frames with your prescription. Finally, if you are a military veteran, your glasses should be covered. Anyone who qualifies for either of these two government programs should be eligible for free or almost-free glasses. (You will have to apply for benefits before you can pick out and receive your glasses.)
